YMCA Ladies Volleyball Team

2011-2012

The volleyball season 2011/12 has started successfully with 'IMKA' beating SGTV Solent in the first round of the National Cup. The game played at St. Benedicts on 16th October resulted in a 3-0 win for IMKA (25-12, 25-20, 25-11). New players making their debut included Dagmara Wormiczek. In the following round, the team were away againt Team South Wales on 6th November in Newport.  We successfully beat them 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-17).

In the 3rd round of the 2011-2012 KO cup, IMKA faced the Malory Eagles in a match which was played at Ernest Bevin College on 27th November. IMKA started slowly losing the first set 20-25 but then started to assert winning the next three sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-18) to run out 3-1 winners in a match lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes. A feature of what was a fairly solid team performance was the contribution of the youngest team member, Sophie Szyszko, who is rapidly gaining in confidence when hitting and blocking. The team now face a long trip to Team Northumbria for a very demanding quarter final. This match is scheduled for 5th February 2012.

YMCA Ladies Volleyball Team

 2010-2011

For the fourth consecutive season we have entered a team in the National Knock-Out Cup. This season promises to be the most exciting so far. In Round 1 we travelled to Canterbury City Ladies and ran out comfortable 25-10, 25-8, 25-7 winners (Oct 3). Round 2 saw us travel to Team Bath who we duly dispatched 25-10, 25-11, 25-11 (7th November). Round 3 saw us make the relatively short journey to Swiss Cottage and returned with a 3-0 victory. The individual set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-18 (Dec 5). At the quarter-final stage on 5th February 2011 we travelled to Stourbridge where we outplayed the University of Birimingham 25-17, 25-21, 25-9. Having reached the semi-finals of the National Womens KO cup for the first time ever, we travelled to the Kettering National Volleyball Centre on Saturday 26th February to play Leeds Carnegie. After a good standard match where we were understrength in one or two positions, we were beaten by the opposition 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16). We completed the indoor season on 11th June at the Weymouth Invitational Tournament where we ran out the overall winners making it the our 3rd consecutive victory in this annual tournament.
